KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Lynne C. Manzo is an environmental psychologist and a professor in the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington.  She is also an adjunct professor in the UW School of Social Work and a faculty affiliate of the UW West Coast Poverty Center.

As an environmental psychologist, Dr. Manzo studies people-place relationships, focusing on people's emotional bonds to place ("place attachment") and how place informs our self concept ("place identity").  With a particular interest in social justice, her work includes the the study of the impacts of displacement on marginalized communities and strategizing ways for diverse people to retain a right to the city.

Prior to coming to Seattle in 2001, Dr. Manzo lived in New York City where she taught and did community organizing work.   For Dr. Manzo, teaching is a passion and serves an important empowerment function.  In 2014 she won the College of Built Environments Lionel Pries Award for Excellence in Teaching, voted on exclusively by students.  She is a first-generation college student.

Beyond Undergraduate Life
